In fact, he had hand-built a solid-body prototype called “The Log”, a design widely considered the first solid-body Spanish guitar ever built, as opposed to the “Hawaiian”, or lap-steel guitar. Leo Fender had already proved that the solid body guitars had a huge market with Fender’s release of the Telecaster in 1946. The Gibson company consulted a jazz guitarist and guitar designer named Les Paul.
Les Paul, for instance, was working with attaching microphones to guitars. By the 1940s Les Paul would invent something much more successful, which was the solid wood body guitar. Les Paul helped redesign, and Gibson manufactured the Goldtop 1956 Les Paul which is still a favorite for playing and a very rare find for collectors today. The addition of a new tail piece that kept the strings firmly in place and less likely to go out of tune in 1955, and having the strings wrap over the tailpiece bar instead of under the tailpiece keeps Gibson’s 1956 Les Paul Goldtop vintage electric solid body guitar one of the most sought after guitars in history. Leo followed this guitar up with the most well known guitar of all time, the Stratocaster.
Les Paul produced a series of extremely popular recordings that introduced the public to his music. They included Paul playing as many as six musical parts at the same time. Leo Fender in 1950 was the first to mass produce an electric guitar which was originally called the Fender Broadcaster. This guitar was quickly re-named to the infamous Telecaster because the name ‘Broadcaster’ was already being used by another company. The Japanese, in the 1980’s started manufacturing electric guitars of similar quality to the more expensive American made models, but with much more affordable pricing.
Les Paul’s famous invention was built with handmade pick-ups and hardware, and a four by four wooden post to which the neck was attached. He finished the body with hollow Swedish body halves and the rest is history! Les Paul is an important figure in the history of electric guitar. He built a guitar by mounting the pickup on a solid block of wood.
